Does the idea of Quantitative Asset and Risk Management get your blood boiling? What exactly is a “tort” and how does it apply in the context of the Czech legal system? In the European Union’s? Feel like becoming a career diplomat? Itching to analyze social and public policy issues on a local or global scale (might as well go global, what isn’t these days?)? Is an interdisciplinary program encompassing art, literature, media studies, psychology, and sociology too narrow for you?

In Prague there are about 10 institutions of higher learning where students can delve into such topics and get an B.A., M.A., or the prized M.B.A. While doing it.

I recently spoke with Dr. Alan Krautstengl, President of the New Anglo-American College in Prague. Over braised chicken and 100% apple juice, he talked about what makes his school, otherwise known as AAC, so special, and about some new programs being offered there.

Are you “just” the President of AAC?

On the academic side I have the rank of Associate

Professor (of Applied Mathematics) and, of course, a Ph.D. I have taught for many years in the United States (he proceeds to cite a bunch of universities, too many to list).

Can you tell me what makes AAC special?

Well, it’s an elite school, the oldest private institution in the Czech Republic as a matter of fact, with renowned faculty, about 50% locally based and 50% from abroad.

Ph.D.’s from Harvard, Yale, etc. Classes také place in a beautiful Baroque building in the middle of Mala Strana.

The same great palace houses our library too, which has thousands of volumes – around 17,000. Our graduates go on to become executives in top international corporations and work for such places as the Office of the President or prestigious international organizations.

Recently, one of our grads was the first Czech woman ever to climb Mt. Everest. We also have world champions among our alumni.

What’s new and exciting these days at AAC?

We’re offering a new MBA program through a partnership with Chapman University. The tuition will be 50% off the US price for students who study in Prague. This program will start in the fall of 2008. It will be a 17-month weekend program to accommodate working professionals and taught by Chapman and our local professors. This alliance with Chapman will also give us access to Vernon Smith, 2002 Nobel Prize winner in Economics.

Is the Chapman MBA program the only new and exciting thing happening?

No, no. Also, we’ll be offering from this fall the chance to get a B.A. In Business Administration in another one of those weekend modular programs. It’s not too late to sign up now in October or in the spring, in February.

Though our School of Business is most popular, students can also get degrees from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of International Relations and Diplomacy (our fastest growing school), and Legal Studies School. Of course all our degree programs are accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education and our Law program carries the British accreditation.

What separates you from the competition here?

In terms of MBAs, there are very few programs here of comparable quality but they are expensive. Of course without the 50% subsidy we would be at the high tuition level also. I might also add that a majority of schools here use mostly local professors who often rotate from one school to another, sharing duties, if you know what I mean.

I do. Is there anything you’d like to add?

I would also like to mention that Chapman’s Dean of the School of Business and Economics, Professor Arthur Kraft, will speak Oct. 22nd at 5:30 pm in our Mural Hall about the new MBA program. His talk will be open to the public.
