Špindlerův Mlýn Resort – Pearl of the Krkonoše Mountains
As the evening temperatures dip below freezing and the winter months rapidly approach, it’s extremely difficult for us ski and snowboard enthusiasts to avoid pulling out the gear, limbering up a bit, and envisioning ripping down a precipitous snowy slope while carving turns at breakneck speeds. Wind in the face, bright sun cascading down upon picturesque slopes, fresh air, and the adrenaline rush of racing your buddies to the bottom: just a few of the joys of skiing and snowboarding.
While the allure of the majestic Alps to the south is hard to beat, this winter why not try Špindlerův Mlýn, one of the most popular resort destinations in the Czech Republic?Situated about 150 kilometers to the northeast of Prague in the scenic Krkonoše Mountains, the resort is a good option for last-minute weekend getaways or even day trips.
Situated from 740 to 1,310 meters above sea level, Skiareal Špindlerův Mlýn offers skiers, snowboarders, and telemarkers over 25 km of downhill runs accessible by 5 chairlifts and 11 T-bars. The three different resorts of Špindlerův Mlýn: Svatý Petr, Medvědín, and Horní Mísečky can be accessed with just one pass at a rate of 750 Kč during high season (650 Kč during middle season and 550 Kč during low season). Snowmaking capability also encompasses 95% of the terrain. For those who like to go big, don’t miss the resorts’ two snowparks and halfpipe.

Svatý Petr is the most challenging of the three resorts with an altitude of 1,196 meters at the summit of Pláň Peak. A double and quad chairlift whisks skiers and riders up the mountain. Interestingly, the area will play host to the world’s top female alpine skiers come January 5-6 as FIS World Cup Skiing once again comes to the Czech Republic. While those capable can rip turns on the same piste that the world’s best attack, there are also other options for lesser skilled skiers. In addition, some resorts offer babysitting services, and kids of all ages can enjoy a plunge into the local aquapark.
“My favorite trail is red #5 at Svatý Petr. It’s a long and scenic intermediate trail which starts at the top of Pláň, goes through the woods, and can be taken all the way down to Herlíkovice, the neighboring town to Špindlerův Mlýn,” says Martin Jandura, spokesman for the resort.
Across the valley and on the other side of the Elbe (Labe) River is the Medvědín area. At a top altitude of 1,235 meters, the sunny slopes of Medvědín offer a variety of fun intermediate cruisers. For experienced, backcountry skiers the summit also offers a great starting point for mountain treks.
The third of the three resorts, Horní Mísečky, also climbs to the Medvědín summit; however, the base lies west of Špindlerův Mlýn and is a bit quieter and ideal for families. Trails range from beginner to advanced.
“I really like skiing before Christmas. There are not as many people and often new snow,” continues Jandura. “February offers colder temperatures, good snow, and lots of sun. In April, the perfect day is skiing in the morning and then relaxing at an après ski bar in the afternoon while enjoying the spring sunshine.”
Špindlerův Mlýn boasts a good variety of pubs, nightlife, and dining options as well. Pivos at either the Audi Ski Bar or Elan Bar Caffé, both located near the mountain base, are the perfect way to make the even wobblier after a demanding day on the slopes. For martinis or mojitos, try the après ski bar at the cozy and elegant Hotel Belmonte.
Hungry for dinner yet? Choices are plentiful, but favorites include Abacante Mexica Restaurant and Bakchus Steak Restaurant and Café. Abacante offers not only fajitas and enchiladas, but also dumplings, potato pancakes, crepes and other traditional fare. Even the most ravenous diners will be satisfied by the hearty dishes and Czech specialties that Bakchus presents.
Not tired yet and ready to hit the town for some late night frivolity? “The nightlife is great and the Czechs really know how to party,” says longtime ski enthusiast Glenn Spicker of Prague.
For any aspiring Bode Miller types, a trip to Špindlerův Mlýn without a visit to the Silver Rock Music Bar is an Olympic-sized mistake. Raucous and rowdy at times, this stylish alpine-style watering hole entertains with dancing shows, laser projections, and elaborate bartending displays. Party into the wee hours of the night at the Felicity Dolska Fun Discotheque. It’s a good bet that you’ll wake up with more than a hangover.
Špindlerův Mlýn also offers numerous off-mountain activities. Cross-country skiers can explore over 100 km of daily-maintained tracks. Other fun options include snowmobiling, snowtubing, the snow-scooteride, a romantic horse sledge ride or the 4 kilometer sledge slide. For adventurous types, try a paragliding tour accompanied by a skilled pilot.

Špindlerův Mlýn at a glance
Špindlerův Mlýn received its name, which can be literally translated as Spindler’s Mill, from a mill belonging to the Spindler family, where neighbors would meet. Currently, the town has about 1,300 permanent residents. Located in Krkonošský National Park, the town also lies in the shadow of Sněžka, the highest mountain in the Czech Republic at 1,602 meters. The town is also notable as the place where Czech author Franz Kafka lived while writing his famous novel, The Castle (Das Schloss).
Legs and muscles exhausted after a vigorous day of skiing? Scattered around town are numerous indoor swimming pools as well as saunas, fitness rooms, whirlpools, and ample places to enjoy soothing massages.
Golf enthusiasts can pretend that it’s actually July while driving balls at a simulator in town. Tennis, bowling, table tennis, darts, squash, billiards, as well as a cinema can also be found quite easily.
So it’s time to start waxing those skis and snowboards, strengthening the quads and building up your beverage tolerance isn’t a bad idea, either. There’s definitely no shortage of extra-curricular activities to be found at Špindlerův Mlýn this winter.
