The Grand Dame Is 100 Years Old
The Hotel Palace Prague, just off historic Wenceslas Square and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, is one of the city’s finest examples of Viennese Art Nouveau style, complete with tall smoked-glass windows, marble flooring, and lavish wood paneling. It was designed by hotelier František Buldra and renowned architect George Justich, who unveiled their ornate creation 100 years ago, in April 1909.
The hotel changed hands in 1924, when entrepreneur Emanuel Oppel, re-envisioned this Grand Dame of the art-deco era as a sophisticated 5-star hotel which shortly thereafter became the epicenter of high society.
Visiting luminaries and prominent locals alike spent time within its decadent chambers — jazz diva Josephine Baker was one of the hotel’s illustrious first guests; legendary Czech opera singer Emma Destinová and her partner Enrico Caruso took up residence at the Hotel Palace on several occasions as well, giving management cause to name rooms after them.
The hotel closed temporarily in January 1986 and a fierce battle over its restoration ensued. Proponents of a sensitive renovation won out and the Hotel Palace narrowly escaped with its charms intact. A specific “house-in-a-house” renovation was employed; leaving the monument’s outer walling untouched — and its original character well-preserved.
The hotel reopened to great acclaim in 1989, with minor renovations taking place in 2006 and 2007. Since then the Hotel Palace has been providing top-class service ever since to glitterati and weary travelers who seek a taste of continental elegance, as well as the comforts of home.
